Fire Department, Village, Join Forces For Safety

Body
If you have driven through Callaway recently you have undoubtedly noticed the new safety feature that has been installed at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Kimball Street. It is a flashing stop sign, and the addition of the signs was the brainchild of Charlie Jorgenson.
The Callaway Courier recently ran a special section in honor of Fire Prevention Week. Out of appreciation for our firefighters, 10 percent of all ad sales in that section were donated back to our local fire departments. Syndicate Publishing Advertising Executive Loleta Connell presented the check on behalf of the Leader to representatives of the Callaway Volunteer Fire Department. Studies have widely shown that developing a child’s reading skills sets them up for success in their educational process for the rest of their school years and beyond. In this world of technology, finding ways to make kids want to pick up a book and read can be a challenge. Thanks to the efforts of two retired Callaway teachers and TeamMates mentors students at Callaway Public School not only have a new option for books - they are excited about it!

It’s a Busy Season For American Legion Auxiliary

The Callaway American Legion Auxiliary monthly meeting started at 6:30 at the Callaway Legion Hall on Oct. 4, 2024. Our President was absent, so our Vice President Cora Belew called the meeting to order. Our chaplain Joyce read the prayer. We said the Pledge of Allegiance, sang the Star-Spangled Banner and recited our Auxiliary Preamble. Our secretary Eileen read the minutes from the Sept. 9 meeting, and they were approved. MaryAnn Boldt presented the financial report. We have a balance of $6,243.08 so we are good so far this year.

Callaway Goes Pink to Raise Awareness

Body
One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. It is a frightening and sobering statistic, and while it is something we should be aware of at all times these kinds of statistics get a little more recognition during the month of October. For nearly four decades now, the country has recognized October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is a time annually devoted to educating everyone about breast cancer and the importance of early detection and access to timely, high-quality care.
The employees of TEAM Physical Therapy in Callaway were just one of many businesses in the community who participated in the 'Pink Out' on Friday, Oct. 18. The day was designated by Callaway District Hospital as a time to raise awareness for breast cancer prevention and research. (Photo courtesy CDH)

THE VILLAGE NATURALIST: Fascinating Facts About Comets

Body
Cindy and I went comet watching last night. It’s been a while since we’ve done that. I was vaguely aware of the comet but didn’t think it was bright enough to see just yet. Then Archie Rickertsen sent me photos of the comet. His pictures were great! I had to go out myself.
