Budget Set, Tax Asking Lowered

Body
The Sept. 9 meeting of the Callaway Board of Education began with public hearings to present the district’s 2024-25 budget and tax request. The hearings were an opportunity for Superintendent JD Furrow to present the budget and tax asking to the public, and for patrons to ask any questions they may have. There was no public comment on either.
Callaway Public Schools continues to look for and implement ways to maintain the best programs and educational opportunities available for their students, while operating within a fiscally responsible budget. That's not always an easy task for a small school, but CPS has managed to lower the levy for the 2024-25 year. (Photo courtesy CPS)

No Need to Fear Lined - Or Many Other - Snakes

Body
“What kind of snake is this?” That is a question that I receive all the time. Amy was showing me a picture on her phone of a dead snake. The dead snake was a lined snake. These are common, small, and secretive snakes that live in open woodlands and grasslands. While I have caught literally hundreds of the little buggers down along the river, I’ve never encountered one here in town, but they are probably here. They live under leaves, logs, and other things and are mostly nocturnal. Being small and nocturnal they are usually not noticed but they will come out in the morning or evening to bask in the sun and that is basically when Amy saw hers. The snake was dead because she crushed it with a rock!
