I get on to find out what’s happening that I may need to cover, or what people are talking about that may lead to a story idea. And I use it to double-check name spellings…a LOT.

    Seventeen young men and women were celebrated at Callaway High School on Sunday, May 10, in their final activity as a collective body - the CHS Class of 2026. For their class motto, the seniors selected Jeremiah 29:11.

    The Callaway American Legion will host a Memorial Day program on Monday, May 25, at 10:30 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held at the Callaway Community Center. The Custer County 4-H Council will meet on Monday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Broken Bow. A meeting agenda will be posted at the Custer County Courthouse in Broken Bow, after May 11. The business meeting is open to the public.

    A few years ago, I had the joy of travelling to Africa and the opportunity to see all the exotic “zoo” animals in their native habitats. Both the white rhinoceros and the black rhinoceros impressed me. The two species can live in proximity to each other because they eat different foods. The parks where we saw the various rhinos were all patrolled by armed agents because poaching of rhinos for their horns is a major problem.

    Street signs to mark Callaway’s intersections have arrived and are ready for installation, but funds are currently lacking to buy the poles needed for mounting them. It is hoped that residents of the community will help make the street sign project a reality by offering to purchase poles so that the signs may be installed soon. The cost per pole is $10.
