While many small towns might go into hibernation this time of year, Callaway becomes a hub of holiday activity. This week the Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual Christmas Around Town celebration, which included a vendor show and soup supper at the Community Center.

50 YEARS AGO : Most area residents spent last Sunday digging out after a weekend storm. The 30 to 40 degree temperatures we experienced Monday and Tuesday were welcomed with open arms.

It seems to me that just about everybody is a photographer these days. People like me who spend a lot of time with a heavy camera dangling around my neck seem to be in the minority at school programs, sporting contests, and community events. I think you know what I mean: at those events there is no shortage of parents, grandparents, teachers, neighbors, friends and other spectators taking photos with their smartphones.

On Monday, Nov. 17, I received a copy of an Omaha Public Schools (OPS) email from a statewide watchdog group concerning a $30.5 million error in the state aid their district received this school year.

The Custer County Recycling Center remain operational or be closed? That is a question that the Custer County Board of Supervisors has been wrestling with for a few months. Residents of Callaway and the surrounding area were busy all weekend digging out of 6 to 8-foot drifts that came out of the snowstorm that hit here early the morning of Nov. 19. An unofficial report by one who shoveled their share was 8 to 10 inches. A freezing rain caught the livestock off guard and the snow hit, causing some losses in the area.

Teacher – Kendra Meyer Kashton Ortiz: You have to first hunt it and shoot it, then you probably put it on the grill or in the stove. Then you season it before you put it inside, and then you cook it at 400 degrees for about an hour.

Teacher – Stephanie Ross Ava Nicholas: You put the turkey in a pan and cut it up. Then you cook it on the stove.
