50 YEARS AGO: The Seven Valleys Service Center celebrated five years in Callaway on Oct. 19, by serving pumpkin pie and coffee at the Village Cafe, where 124 persons registered for prizes. Minnie Hanes won a digital clock, and 100 pumpkins were given to children.

Callaway District Hospital Shines a Light on Breast Cancer Awareness Month October is observed across the nation as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to emphasize the importance of lifesaving early detection, education, and support for individuals and families impacted by the disease. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Breast Cancer Awareness efforts, a milestone in raising awareness and advancing the fight against breast cancer.

Phantom Trail Provides Scare For a Good Cause

If ghoulish frights and tasty delights are your thing, the Gothenburg Community Playhouse/Sun Theatre has an event that is sure to be right up your alley. The haunted trail is back - and with a new location and a new name, it promises to be even bigger and better than ever.

Breast Cancer Journey Leads to Comfort For Thousands

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - a situation that Gothenburg’s Mary Harbur is all too familiar with. On Nov. 12, 2014, Mary was told that she had stage 2b grade 3 estrogen-positive breast cancer, with lymphovascular invasion that spread into her lymph nodes.

School And Taxes: Navigating The Complicated Waters

At the September meeting of the Callaway Board of Education, the tax levy request and property tax request for the school district were unanimously approved. That approval came after a public hearing that started the meeting, as well as a public hearing in front of the Custer County Board of Supervisors, which was required because the district was asking to go over the lid set by the state.

Improved Playground Ready For Fun

The playground in Callaway’s Morgan Park has a new look and a new surface, thanks to the efforts of the Village Economic Development Director Kacee Gillis. The project was the first that Gillis set her sights on when taking the role a year and a half ago.

HOMECOMING ROYALTY - Pam Henry and Stan Weatherly were crowned after the Bears stomped Litchfield 41-14. Runners-up for queen were Tami Leigh and Peggy Witthuhn, and for king were Monty Birnie and Bean Eastwood.

Saluting Our Local Volunteer Firefighters

We hope we never have to call them, but are so thankful they are there if we ever do. They are our volunteer firefighters and emergency medical services crew, and the Village of Callaway is fortunate to have a great team.
