NDA Announces 2025 NAYI Selections

The Nebraska Agricultural Youth Institute (NAYI) has announced that 220 high school juniors and seniors across Nebraska have been selected to be a part of the institute this summer. Put on by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA), NAYI brings together hundreds of students every year to learn more about Nebraska agriculture, network with ag leaders and explore career opportunities.

20 YEARS AGO: It will cost owners of stray dogs and cats if the animals are impounded in Callaway. The Callaway Village Board voted to approve Ordinance 2005-6-1, providing for the impounding of stray animals and the associated fines at the June 7 meeting. Callaway has entered into an interlocal with North Platte for use of the animal shelter and facilities for abandoned dogs and cats from Callaway. Should an animal be impounded, the initial fee for the owner to retrieve the creature will be $130. An additional $10 is assessed per day up to five days. The ordinance went immediately into effect upon passage.

Community Gathers to Celebrate CHS FCCLA

Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America is a high school organization whose mission is to promote personal growth and leadership development through Family and Consumer Sciences education. Focusing on the multiple roles of family member, wage earner, and community leader, members develop skills for life through character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge, and career preparation.

Indoor Program Just as Meaningful

Rainy weather and chilly temperatures forced the Callaway American Legion to move the annual Memorial Day program from Rose Hill Cemetery to the Callaway Community Center on Monday. The program attracted a large enough crowd that additional chairs needed to be set up prior to the introduction of the speaker.

Custer County Sheriff Dan Osmond reports the following individuals were incarcerated in the Custer County Jail as of May 23, 2025. Anthony Paul Elder – booked May 5, serving sentence for possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony.

Senior Life Solutions Celebrates Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month (MHAM), and the folks at Callaway’s Senior Life Solutions have participated in several activities throughout the month to help bring awareness to mental health. “Even though our mental health is a serious topic, we chose a lighthearted theme to help break the ice and reduce the stigma around our mental health,” said Janel Brestel, Office Patient Coordinator for SLS.
