There are some people who can hardly be bothered to step outside and look up at a solar eclipse. Me, I drove 1,500 miles last week to view it. Seven years ago we didn’t have to drive anywhere to see the eclipse and I decided at that time that when this one came around I would head for Texas. I’ve seen two or three partial eclipses, but until last week only the one total eclipse that passed over Gothenburg.

Compost Day: Get Your Gardens Ready

Adams Land & Cattle (ALCC) is excited to be sharing their nutrient-rich and organic compost with local gardeners during their fifth annual Adams Compost Days. Custer County residents are encouraged to bring buckets and stop at their loadout facility, just north of the South Lot entrance on Highway 21.

Board Welcomes New Member

The April 8 meeting of the Callaway Board of Education began with an unusual event for this time of year - the swearing-in of a new board member. Board President Mike Reiff presented the oath and swore in new member Rebecca Eggleston, who was selected by the board at last month’s meeting to fulfill the remainder of the term vacated by Vince Guthrie who has relocated.

Speedy Start to 2024

Nebraska roadways are off to a speedy start to 2024. In the first 100 days of the year, Nebraska State Troopers issued more citations for speeding at over 90 miles per hour and speeding at over 100 miles per hour than any year in the past decade.

Custer County Jail Report

As of April 15, 2024, there were 10 males and one female lodged in the Custer County Jail. County Sheriff Dan Osmond reports the following inmates: Cooper Thomas Brass - booked Feb. 23 on one count of procuring for a minor or mentally incompetent person, a Class 1 misdemeanor, and one count of 1st degree sexual assault, a Class 2 felony. Bond was set at $150,000 Dustin James Farritor - sentenced April 8 on various traffic offenses James Aaron Hendrickson - sentenced on April 9 for obstructing a peace officer, and driving under the influence of liquor.

Week of the Young Child

The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the world's largest early childhood education association, with nearly 60,000 members and a network of 51 Affiliates.
