Pioneer Spirit Still Alive in Callaway

Callaway’s first Pioneer Picnic was held in 1933 in conjunction with the dedication of the first Custer County Courthouse in the town’s Morgan Park. Since then, only World War II has prevented the celebration from taking place.
The Callaway American Legion Honor Guard traditionally leads off the Pioneer Picnic parade, which is set this year for Saturday, June 28, beginning at 10:45 a.m. Lunch will be available in Morgan Park following the parade, and the car show will get underway at noon. Morgan Bud Meyer was born at 10:45 a.m., weighing 6 pounds 9.5 ounces and measuring 19.5 inches in length. Grandparents are Brett and Becky Meyer of Brady, Cinta and Riley Anderson of Sutherland, and Shawn and Julie Smith of Arnold.

Custer County Sheriff Dan Osmond reports the following individuals were incarcerated in the Custer County Jail as of June 16, 2025. Anthony Paul Elder – booked May 5, serving sentence for possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony.

Legion Auxiliary Discusses Upcoming Events

The Callaway American Legion Auxiliary’s monthly meeting started at 6:30 p.m. at the Callaway Legion Hall on June 9, 2025. Vice President Cora Belew called the meeting to order. Our Chaplin was not present, so MaryAnn started the meeting with a prayer. We then followed our Vice President in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, singing the Star-Spangled Banner and saying the Auxiliary Preamble.

The Callaway Volunteer Fire Department elected Larry Mowery, Larry Franssen and Robert Edgington to serve as officers for the Custer County Mutual Aid Control at their meeting on Monday, June 2. Mutual Aid is made up of representatives from all fire departments in Custer County. The group meets four times a year with a different fire department providing the officers for each year.
Love Signs of Norfolk installed Callaway's digital message sign in the mini park, concluding months of planning and fundraising led by the Callaway Bear Boosters.

Be A Game Changer and Help Your Community

Arnold residents will double-down their donations at the upcoming ‘Be A Game Changer’ fundraiser. This event is on June 22 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Arnold Community Center with the purpose of improving Arnold. The Arnold Community Foundation Fund has agreed to match all local donated funds dollar for dollar. Following a free will donation meal, teams can compete in three game changing events, including a combination of all three called a triathlon. There will be three rounds for each event and each event will last for 50 minutes.
