Callaway District Hospital Shines a Light on Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is observed across the nation as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to emphasize the importance of lifesaving early detection, education, and support for individuals and families impacted by the disease. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Breast Cancer Awareness efforts, a milestone in raising awareness and advancing the fight against breast cancer.

At Callaway District Hospital and Medical Clinics, our providers and staff are committed to supporting women’s health by encouraging regular screenings and open conversations with their healthcare team.

Mammograms and other preventive services play a crucial role in detecting breast cancer early when it is most treatable.

“Breast cancer touches nearly every family in some way,” said Suzie Jorgenson, Radiology Manager. “Our goal is to make sure patients in our community have access to the care, information, and resources they need for prevention, early detection, and treatment.”

In the U.S. in 2025, about 316,950 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, along with additional 59,080 cases on non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer. In that same year, approximately 42,170 women are expected to die from breast cancer. The lifetime risk for a woman in the U.S. to develop invasive breast cancer is roughly 1 in 8 (≈ 13 %).

Throughout October, Callaway District Hospital will highlight the important work of its Radiology Department, which provides essential diagnostic imaging and mammography services. To show support, the Radiology team invites the Callaway community to join them in wearing pink on Oct. 24.

The hospital also encourages the community to show support during Breast Cancer Awareness Month by wearing pink, sharing educational resources with family and friends, and encouraging loved ones to schedule their regular screenings.
