50 YEARS AGO:
The Callaway men’s softball team won the Callaway Chamber of Commerce men’s softball tournament Aug. 13-15, by defeating Pleasanton 12-6. The first prize award for Callaway was $65.
State Tax Commissioner William E. Peters announced that as a result of the State Board of Equalization and Assessment meeting on Aug. 12, state sales tax has been increased from 2.5 percent to 3 percent on all sales occurring on and after Sept. 1, 1976.
25 YEARS AGO
The Callaway Bear Booster Club will host is annual Burger Bash on soap scrimmage night on Aug. 23. Meanwhile, the Callaway Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad will host its annual barbecue fundraiser at the school on Aug. 26.
The inaugural run of the Sandhills Open Road Challenge stopped briefly in Callaway as 30 amateur racing enthusiasts completed the first leg of a timed rally from Broken Bow.
20 YEARS AGO:
The School District 180 Board of Education settled two controversial issues that related to Oconto School and its former District 256. The board voted 6-0 to implement a plan to bus Oconto students to Callaway School on Fridays for band, music, library, art, lunch and social time despite continued opposition from District 256’s former board and current members of the advisory council.
Bob Griffith of Seal Beach, California, formerly of Callaway, crossed the finish line in the SORC One-Mile Shootout at 198.2 mph to claim the King of the Hill honors in his Jeff Gordon NASCAR Chevy Monte Carlo.
