It is almost “Game Time!” By the time you read this article we will have already had a couple of varsity contests to start the year. In this month’s Superintendent’s Corner, I am going to share a little bit of my philosophy about being an interscholastic activity fan. I have been a lover of sports for as long as I can remember and I have had the opportunity to play, coach, and cheer for both winning and losing teams. If you have read this far, I am sure you are thinking that we are going to retrace every ra-ra talk about sportsmanship you have ever heard. While I do think sportsmanship is very important, that is not the direction I am really heading.

My favorite season is officially here! Fall, yes - but I’m talking specifically about football season. I cannot remember ever not being a football fan.

Callaway Public Schools Superintendent JD Furrow was accompanied by four members of the CPS Board of Education at the Aug. 12 meeting of the Callaway Village Board.

This weekend marks the 34th annual event in Callaway that brings families together and fills the sky with color. The Kite Flight happens every Labor Day weekend at Foster Smith Field, four miles southeast of Callaway on Highway 40. This year’s event will be Aug.

Two new policies appeared on the agenda of the Callaway Board of Education’s Aug. 11 meeting for second read. One of them, the policy regarding acceptable attire at school, had the board split down the middle. The other proposed policy met with unanimous approval and no public input.

There's a fresh face at a familiar institution, breathing new life into both Custer and Dawson County’s 4-H and Extension Education programs. Sarah Fanning, a Colorado native, has just completed her first year of service as the counties’ Extension Educator, and has spent that time learning and leading in equal doses.

The 2025 Custer County Fair is in the books, and the rewards for all of the hard work by area 4-H and FFA members have been distributed. Competition for the fair began on July 17 with 4-H Style Judging & Clothing Construction Judging, followed by the dog show on July 19. July 23-30 the 4-H and FFA kids showed livestock, small animals, food, plants, and a variety of projects. They also demonstrated horsemanship and marksmanship skills.

For the week ending Aug. 10, 2025, Nebraska’s field crops continued to advance under warm, mostly dry conditions that kept combines and irrigation systems busy. Many producers wrapped up wheat harvest while monitoring late-summer moisture needs for corn and soybean. Topsoil moisture rated 3% very short, 21% short, 66% adequate and 10% surplus, while subsoil moisture rated 6% very short, 23% short, 65% adequate and 6% surplus. Statewide, fieldwork averaged 5.1 days suitable for the week.
