Although the session has adjourned, work at the Capitol continues through interim studies. These studies allow senators and committees to take a deeper look at issues that may lead to legislation in future sessions. Any senator or committee can introduce a study resolution, which is then assigned by the Executive Board to the appropriate standing committee or, in some cases, to a select interim committee if the issue falls outside a standing committee’s jurisdiction.

Every good party has to include food, and the 140 years celebration of Callaway at this year’s Pioneer Picnic this weekend will have plenty of options to choose from! Most of the food vendors are also raising funds for a specific cause, so plan to attend all of the festivities, bring your appetite, and help support these local endeavors.

The Callaway Good Life Center is also a vital part of our local economy, employing many community members and supporting the flow of wages to local service providers. Like many nursing homes, Callaway Good Life Center has struggled with a shortage of staff, often having to rely on costly agency workers to ensure quality care for its residents. At the same time, Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement rates have failed to keep pace with the increasing costs of providing care, leaving a significant financial gap.

Every year the Pioneer Picnic Fun Run at Morgan Park becomes ever more popular. Race organizer Sue Stratton said this year’s event brought 53 runners and walkers of all ages to compete in a variety of categories for T-shirts and bragging rights. The Ninth Annual Seven Valleys Rodeo is scheduled for Sunday and Monday, June 29 and 30, at the Seven Valleys Rodeo arena southeast of Callaway on Highway 40. Starting times for the International Rodeo Association (IRA) approved event will be 2 p.m. on Sunday and 8 p.m. on Monday. Rodeo stock will be provided by Hudson Brothers of Leoti, Kansas. Competition will take place in seven events. They include saddle Bronc riding, bareback riding, calf roping, bull riding, bulldogging, ladies barrel racing, and team roping.
