The office of the Callaway District Hospital public transit service has a new home. The transportation program was implemented by the hospital three years ago, and CEO Brett Eggleston says many local people still don’t understand the full scope of the services the program provides.

In just a few short days the ringing of the school bell will be heard once more, signaling the beginning of another year. For some kiddos, the first day of school is packed with excitement - getting to see all their friends again, and wearing the new outfit and shoes that mom made them wait for this day to put on.

Take a drive through rural America, and you will likely see many small-town mainstreets with empty buildings, boarded-up windows. Sadly, it has become an all-too-familiar sight.

Annual Corn Boil Everyone is invited to Callaway Lutheran Church’s Annual Corn Boil, to be held Sunday, Aug. 3, at the Callaway Community Center.

On Saturday afternoon, July 26, members of the Robert D. Booker family gathered at Rose Hill Cemetery near Callaway for a special Nebraska Medal of Honor Recipient Wreath presentation. They were joined by several American Legion Post #59 members, American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit #59 members, and other Legion and Auxiliary members from neighboring communities who were paying their respects to a local serviceman.

For over 25 years, growers have benefited from the latest advancements in soybean production, management and marketing at Soybean Management Field Days. This year marks the second year that the Soybean Testing Ag Performance Solutions (TAPS) competition highlights are included in the field days, including lessons from last year’s contest and progress this season.

The Nebraska Department of Education’s Nutrition Services office has announced the Income Eligibility Guidelines for free and reduced price meals for persons unable to pay the full price of meals served under the National School Lunch, Breakfast, Special Milk and Child and Adult Care Food Programs. Application forms must be available to all households of participants attending a participating school, agency, or day care center. The application includes a letter containing instructions and helpful information for parents, guardians, or adult participants.

As I write my column this week, my heart is full and my legs are achy. You see, I spent the weekend on an “adventure” with my three youngest grandchildren - ages 4, 7, and 8. We hung out at an arcade and water park during the heat of the day, and took in the Buffalo County Fair during the evening…though it was still far from cool.
