The Jazz Age was in full swing, Mount Rushmore National Monument was dedicated, the Phantom of the Opera was a new hit, and The Great Gatsby was written. The year was 1925, and along with all of those highlights, it was the year that Charles Myers was born.

Yep, spring has arrived. I didn’t need a calendar; I saw proof of it in my back yard.

District 43, I’m pleased to share the latest updates from the Capitol with you. It’s been a fast-paced and productive week, and as always, keeping you informed about the work being done remains a priority.

Graduation day for the 15 members of the Callaway High School Class of 2025 is a little more than six weeks away. For the next few weeks we will be spotlighting each of those seniors in the Courier, leading up to our special Senior Salutes edition on May 8.

Members of Nebraska LEAD Program’s Class 43 recently embarked on a 10-day National Study/Travel Seminar, gaining firsthand exposure to national and regional agricultural systems, policymaking and advocacy. One of those LEAD class members is Lucy Kimball of Callaway. The seminar, held Feb. 5-14, took Fellows to Kansas City, Washington, D.C., Chicago and Moline, Illinois, for a series of immersive experiences. “This seminar broadens the perspectives of Nebraska’s agricultural leaders by exposing them to key institutions, industry leaders and policymakers,” said Nebraska LEAD Program Director Kurtis Harms. “By seeing and engaging with agriculture beyond our state, Fellows gain knowledge that helps them advocate for the industry in new and meaningful ways.”

The Livin’ Out Loud Board of Directors is excited to announce the lineup for the 2025 concert event, which once again includes some of the biggest names in Christian contemporary music. Music fans of all genres gather yearly in Gothenburg for an uplifting outdoor music festival.

An honest man was being tailgated by a stressedout woman on a busy boulevard. Suddenly, the light turned yellow just in front of him. He did the right thing and stopped at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection.

Callaway Public School is dedicated to providing the best quality education possible for its students. The district is proud to boast that the percentage of CHS graduates who go on to some type of post-secondary training, whether college or vocational, is one of the highest in the state.

A brief recap of bills heard last week in the committees I serve on: LB 576 introduced by Sen. Myron Dorn was heard in the Transportation and Telecommunications committee this week. This bill would help our rural 911 services by raising the allowable surcharge that wireless carriers can collect, from .70 cents to a dollar for everyone across the state. Currently cities of a metropolitan class only pay .50 cents, while the remainder of the state pays .70 cents. The bill directs the Public Service Commission 'to maximize operational support for all public safety answering points in the state' when determining the surcharge amount. This increase is valuable, especially to rural 911 services, as it equalizes Omaha and Lincoln’s contribution with the remainder of the state.
