From the Collection of Pat Young We’ve got a two-letter word we use constantly that may have more meanings than any other. The word is UP.

TAt the Nebraska Press Association’s annual convention in April, Gov. Jim Pillen issued an in-person special proclamation designating the week of June 26-30, as Community Newspaper Week in Nebraska. In addition, the Nebraska Legislature adopted Legislative Resolution 87 to congratulate NPA on its Sesquicentennial year. It was introduced by Speaker John Arch.

This year marks the 90th year of the Callaway Pioneer Picnic. The first Pioneer Picnic was held in 1933, in conjunction with the dedication in Morgan Park of the first Custer County Courthouse. With the exception of the World War II years, the community event has been held annually ever since.

“Up, Up and Away” was the theme of the 2023 Dawson County 4-H Camp at Comeca south of Cozad. Twenty-three campers, four counselors, and three staff gathered from June 6-8 for fun, fellowship, and education in a camp setting.

The Callaway Chamber Yard of the Month winner for June is…Burton and Carol Willis! Burt and Carol have a lovely yard and the nomination for them was selected by the Chamber. The Willis’s devote their time as the Lions Club Chapter Leader and heading up the Callaway Red Cross Bloodmobile. They also enjoy swimming, and as you can tell they love to spend time in their yard and garden. Thank you for taking care of your property and helping make Callaway a beautiful place to call home.
