*Editor’s Note: In the Oct. 5 and Oct. 12 issues of The Callaway Courier, we presented information regarding the proposed staffing mandates for long-term care facilities being presented by CMS and the impact those mandates will have on facilities like Callaway Good Life Center. Last week a group of governors, including Nebraska’s Jim Pillen, took action in an attempt to stop the proposal from moving forward.

It’s not uncommon for people to feel down during the winter months. They miss the sun, the outdoors, and their friends. In some cases, depression during these months sets in. This type of depression is called seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and is often referred to as the “winter blues.”

Mom guilt is a heavy bag to carry like the backpack busting at the seams with textbooks I used to carry across campus. It weighed me down, slowed my pace, and made my shoulders ache.

I’ve got a tree in my front yard that has prompted a number of people to ask me what kind it is. It is a northern catalpa. I had never seen a catalpa until we moved to Gothenburg, but there are a number of them in this area and I’ve seen them along the river.

As fall sports season is winding down it is time for the fine arts department to shine, as the One Act team begins their competitive season. The team has been practicing for the past three months and participated in their first event of the year at Ord on Monday.

Two elderly women were out driving in a large car both could barely see over the dashboard. As they were cruising along, they came to an intersection. The stoplight was red, but they just went on through. The woman in the passenger seat thought to herself, “I must be losing it. I could have sworn we just went through a red light.”

When I was in college, I first became acquainted with the phrase, “Road trip!” To this day those two words still stir up excitement as they mean I’ll be off on an adventure, sometimes just a short jaunt, and at others a multi-day trip.

Nebraska’s pheasant, quail, and partridge seasons opened on Oct. 28. Historically, hunters swinging on game and firing outside of their safe zones of fire have been the primary cause of upland bird hunting incidents. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reminds hunters to make sure safety is at the forefront of every hunt by following the four basic rules of firearm safety: Treat every firearm as if it is loaded. Always point the muzzle of your firearm in a safe direction.

Make plans now to join American Legion Auxiliary Unit 59 of Callaway for their annual fundraiser soup and dessert supper to be held Nov. 12 from 5-7 p.m. at the Callaway Community Center. This is a date change that will allow our Veterans and their families the opportunity to attend various Veteran's Day programs and festivities held in out-of-town venues.
