Back in the cowboy days, a westbound wagon train was lost and low on food. No other humans had been seen for days, when finally they saw an old Jew sitting beneath a tree.

It is always interesting to see how many people visit our area museums and historical sites each year, as well as where they come from. According to data compiled at the Gothenburg Historical Museum, this past summer 13 of those visitors were not people at all, they were pets.

The cop got out of his car and the kid, that was stopped for speeding, rolled down his window. “I’ve been waiting for you all day,” the cop said.

If you’ve been paying attention to the “out of doors” lately you have probably seen a bunch of dragonflies. This is the “season” for them. As adults, dragonflies fly around and feed on small insects, particularly mosquitoes. The male will establish a territory over a pond, and he will vigorously defend that territory by chasing off any other males. This leads to some amazing flying duels.

“Go big red!” Right! We’re in Nebraska. But as a naturalist I would have to say for Nebraska we should say “Go Big Yellow!” We don’t have a lot of natural reds this time of year, but the color yellow is everywhere.

Some people are kind, polite, and sweet-spirited – until you try to sit in their pews. Many folks want to serve God, but only as advisers.
