Driving across the beach at McConaughy is not for the faint hearted or two-wheel drive vehicle. The sand is fine, powdery and has been compared to the sand in Hawaii. But, it is deep in places. Driving in 4L is a must unless one would like to be pulled to safety by the tractor that’s always on duty.

World’s Largest Flag Kite Flown at Callaway

Each Labor Day weekend since 1990, hundreds of kit flyers and spectators converge on the area for the Callaway Kite Flight, and this past weekend saw many return visitors as well as some new faces. Those attending were in for a treat, as the world’s largest flag kite was launched on Sunday as the crowd and launch team cheered with excitement.

Custer County was officially organized in July 1877, and a spot of land on the Young ranch, located about seven miles east of Callaway, was designated as the temporary county seat. The first Custer County Courthouse was established on the ranch and served the newly formed county until 1881, when the county seat was moved to the new town of Broken Bow.

August has been a busy month at Hof Batie. The constant heat and prolonged dry spell have kept us hustling to keep the crops, lawn, garden, flower beds and young trees watered. Then there are all the seasonal activities to attend and special occasions thrown in to keep the calendar full.

AMANDA WEHNES Injuries continue to plague the South Loup Bobcat cross country team with two members sidelined Thursday at the Burwell Invitational, but that didn’t discourage them from bringing home four individual medals. Sophomore Ella Cool finished in third place with a time of 18:37.
