Max Hughes was a tenacious 21-year-old with a deep love for his family, friends, the sport of wrestling, and sneakers when he was killed in a car accident in 2020. A three-time Nebraska wrestling state champion for Syracuse High School and a collegiate wrestler for Iowa Western, Hughes was well-known for his warm smile, hard work ethic, and enormous collection of unique footwear, especially Nike shoes.

Summertime. For most, this signals thoughts of warm weather and good times with family and friends. Sadly, what brings happiness for some can trigger stress and sorrow for others. In the words of a Vietnam War veteran, “The fourth of July was once my favorite holiday with friends and family…but now it is a day I wish never existed.”

The South Loup Lady Bobcats are hosting a Hoops Camp on July 15 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Open to girls entering second through sixth grade, aspiring hoopsters will learn the basics of the game and have a lot of fun.

The Callaway FCCLA announced on July 7 they have reached a big milestone. For the past nine years, the organization has been collecting pop tabs and those who have donated helped them reach their goal of 1,000,000 tabs.

Callaway Public Schools has announced that as they understand, beginning with the 2022-23 school year, the USDA will not be providing breakfast and lunch to all students who attend school. Callaway Public Schools encourages families to complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meal Application for the upcoming school year.

The culmination of the hard work of area 4-H and FFA kids is nearly here. The Custer County Fair kicks off a week from today, July 21, with the annual 4-H fashion show at Broken Bow’s Evangelical Free Church leading off the week-long schedule of events.

The 9th Annual C.E.B. Memorial 100th Meridian 5K and 10K road race will be held in downtown Cozad on Saturday, August 13, 2022.

It has been a very busy few weeks in Callaway, with the community hosting two large bike riding tours, alumni weekend and the annual Pioneer Picnic. Add to the mix a hail storm that damaged nearly every home in town, and it creates a recipe for a lot of tired individuals. Yet the planning and events continue.
