CHS Class of ‘52 Celebrates 70th Reunion

The Class of 1952 met at Shotgun Annies in Callaway on Friday evening June 24 for their 70th Reunion. There were nine members of the class in attendance: Raymond Armstrong, Gothenburg; Gloria (King) Brookman and husband Richard, Kimball; Tony Pitkin and wife Bev, Callaway; Marjorie (Smith) Schneider and husband Alex, Callaway; Virginia (Waldron) Witthuhn, Callaway; Beverly (Whaley) Fellers, Lexington; Lucille (Woodward) Beshaler, Callaway; Rose (Booker) Hirsch, Broken Bow; and Roberta (Hoffman) Nansel, Grand Island. Roberta's daughter Melanie Sheen of Grand Island and Rose's daughter Denise Daake, Broken Bow were also in attendance.

Area Event of the Year Set for August 20

In just six short weeks an estimated 20,000 people will be converging on our community and gathering at Lake Helen for the annual Livin' Out Loud concert. Those people will be buying food, fueling up vehicles, staying in our hotels and campgrounds and visiting our stores. The event is a huge boon to the economy of the area - and is a whole lot of work to pull off.

Bring Home Family Memories, Not Ticks

Recently our family went on a camping trip. Our kids loved how we canoed our supplies across a lake and set up our campsite. My wife and I were reminded how much work it is. Soon our children were experiencing more mosquitos, flies, caterpillars, and ticks than they had ever seen before.

Minutes of June Callaway Legion Auxiliary Meeting

Unit 59 of Callaway Legion Auxiliary met on June 20, 2022. The meeting was held at American Legion Hall in Callaway at 6:30 p.m. The meeting started off with the President Deondra Lashley calling the meeting to order. Our chaplain was not present at this meeting so Jo Chesley read the prayer. Deondra led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and we recited the Auxiliary Preamble. Eileen Wilson read the minutes of the May meeting. The minutes were approved as read.

Oconto Celebrates Our Nation’s Independence All Weekend

Every year the first weekend in July lends itself to a community celebration in Oconto. The events kicked off on Friday, July 1 with a mystery scavenger hunt, the winners of which were announced during the parade on Saturday morning. Third place in the hunt went to the Oconto Camping Club; Sandy Eggleston’s team took second; and the winning team was that of Dani Eggleston.

Saying Goodby to ‘Old Glory’ The Proper Way

After a shower gave the ground a much needed soaking on Sunday night, the clouds gave way to traditional 4th of July weather - sunny and hot. The Village of Callaway continued their celebratory ways of the last month, and hosted a flag retirement ceremony and fireworks display to commemorate our nation’s Independence Day.

Pioneer Picnic is over, but the Village of Callaway remains in celebration mode as they gear up for the 4th of July festivities. Sue Phelps and family have been busy organizing another fantastic fireworks display and Independence Day celebration, which all gets underway at 8 p.m. Monday at the ballpark.
