Sometimes it’s nice to just have a get together in a community for no purpose other than…to just get together. And if you can throw a little food and laughter into the mix, so much the better!

All of those could be found at Henry’s Bar in Callaway on Sunday evening, Oct. 9, for the 2nd Annual Salsa Contest. Five salsa makers entered their favorite mixture of ingredients into the contest, which were then judged by four judges and the public.

“We offer chips and salsa here all the time, and a lot of times people will say, ‘Well I make salsa!’ So that is kind of what prompted us to just have a salsa contest,” said Henry Moore, owner of the bar and grill.

Henry said he doesn’t really have any rules pertaining to the entries, including how far ahead of time the salsa is made.

The unanimous choice for winner of this year’s contest was Rochale Schriner, who admitted she finished making her salsa about an hour before the competition began.

Runner-up went to Rochale’s husband, Joe Schriner. The couple each received a commemorative mug and bragging rights for their salsa making skills.

Owners Henry and Brooke Moore said they try to cater fun activities at the bar to appeal to a variety of people and interests. One of their biggest draws is taco pizza night, which will be held next on Oct. 18. Then on Friday, Oct. 28, they will host a Halloween party.
