Editor's Note: While we understand that due to redistricting boundaries in Nebraska, Matt Williams is technically no longer our Senator, we elected him to serve our area in the State Legislature - which he has now done for two terms. Students planning to attend kindergarten at Callaway Public Schools in the 2022-2023 school year will have an opportunity to participate in Kindergarten Round Up on April 21 at 1:15 p.m. If you are new to this area please contact the school office at 386-2272 to get more information.

Rural communities like Callaway rely on the accessibility of quality healthcare, but in the last two years that industry has been hit exceptionally hard. Between the pandemic and the aging population of active nurses and healthcare professionals, the future of rural healthcare could be in jeopardy. According to the Nebraska News Service, the latest report from the Nebraska Center for Nursing shows nearly 4,200 more nurses are needed to meet statewide demand, with that shortfall expected to approach 5,500 positions by 2025- a figure equivalent to 19% of the current workforce. Those statistics are alarming, and have some rural hospital administrators scrambling for solutions.

Callaway Public School has released the Honor Roll for the first three quarters of the 2021-22 school year. The following students have achieved that distinction.

Quiz Bowl Champs at CHS: The Callaway High School Quiz Bowl team won the Custer County Quiz Bowl in Broken Bow on March 30. Team members are, from left: Carleigh Laible, Addie Bailey, Nadeema Haidle, CJ Quandt, Dawson Mason and Uotong Haidle.

The Village of Callaway has received a $15,000 Nebraska Department of Economic Development Civic and Community Center Financing Fund (CCCFF) Grant with the assistance of Central Nebraska Economic Development District. These grant funds will be matched by the Village to fund a pool planning study to develop a plan, determine costs, and prepare a site plan for a new pool and bathhouse.

Our Legion Auxiliary meeting was held at the American Legion Hall on March 21, 2022, at 6:30. We opened in normal procedure with the prayer, Star Spangled Banner, Pledge of Allegiance and our Auxiliary Preamble. We read the minutes of the last meeting & the Treasurers report and everything stands approved.
