Happy holidays CPS family! We have a lot to celebrate this year. In this month’s corner, I get to share our most recent AQUESTT ratings.

On Nov. 7, I joined Senators Bob Andersen, Jared Storm, and Paul Strommen in a pledge to Nebraska taxpayers that we will not support any tax increase(s) that will grow the overall tax burden on Nebraskans. Any proposed tax/ fee increase or expansion absolutely must provide for a dollar for dollar decrease in another current tax burden, guaranteeing that we hold the line. As we move closer to the first day of session, it is important to set the parameters of how we intend to address the current budget deficit and the approach to balance it. To quote Reagan, “The problem is not that people are taxed too little, the problem is that the government spends too much.”

While many small towns might go into hibernation this time of year, Callaway becomes a hub of holiday activity. This week the Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual Christmas Around Town celebration, which included a vendor show and soup supper at the Community Center.

Custer County Sheriff Dan Osmond reports that as of Dec. 1, 2025, there were five males and no females lodged in the Custer County Jail.

50 YEARS AGO : Most area residents spent last Sunday digging out after a weekend storm. The 30 to 40 degree temperatures we experienced Monday and Tuesday were welcomed with open arms.

It seems to me that just about everybody is a photographer these days. People like me who spend a lot of time with a heavy camera dangling around my neck seem to be in the minority at school programs, sporting contests, and community events. I think you know what I mean: at those events there is no shortage of parents, grandparents, teachers, neighbors, friends and other spectators taking photos with their smartphones.

On Monday, Nov. 17, I received a copy of an Omaha Public Schools (OPS) email from a statewide watchdog group concerning a $30.5 million error in the state aid their district received this school year.

The Custer County Recycling Center remain operational or be closed? That is a question that the Custer County Board of Supervisors has been wrestling with for a few months. During the September meeting of the board, a large crowd was on hand, some of whom shared their thoughts on the future of the center.

Today, Nov. 27, is Thanksgiving - a day when most families get together over a big meal and just enjoy one another’s company, grateful for another year together and the many blessings that come with it.
