Reta, the daughter of Leland and Mary Stevenson, was born June 23, 1935, at Westerville, where she grew up. After graduating from Westerville High School, Reta attended Kearney State Teachers College and earned her teaching certificate. She then moved to North Platte where she taught at District 44, south of town.
