I am going to take my column space this week to talk about a very serious subject. It may not be a topic of conversation at the dinner table or coffee shop, but it is one that hits close to home for me.

The community of Callaway has several little gems that make up the backbone of the town. A wellstocked locally owned grocery store and hardware store, a state-of-the-art medical facility, an outstanding school system, and a high-quality nursing home, to name a few.

Editor’s Note: The following poem was written by Callaway teacher Tina Donegan and will be performed by a Callaway High School speech student. There were 12 of us sitting on the cold pews in the courtroom.

Youth who are sophomores or juniors in high school in a public or private school, or who are homeschooled and have an interest in learning about and developing their leadership potential, are invited to apply for the Great Plains RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) program. Local Rotary Clubs will review applications, conduct interviews, and make final selections to send participants to Great Plains RYLA camp July 13-17, 2026, at Camp Maranatha near Brady.

Something Smells Fishy – And it Tastes Good!.

If Cozad cattlewoman Linda Benjamin has her way, her grandchildren or great-grandchildren won’t ever have to worry about a cancer diagnosis. “If everybody gets together and we work really hard on this, we’re going to beat this,” says Benjamin.

Jeff Headley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Headley of Callaway, was awarded the Eagle Scout Badge at special ceremonies held March at the United Methodist Church in Callaway.

This winter has been open and dry across most of Nebraska and according to the Drought Monitor, many areas are increasing in their drought classification intensity. We are a few weeks away from another growing season and who knows how much moisture lies ahead.

Annual Spaghetti Feed Everyone is invited to the Callaway Lutheran Church Annual Spaghetti Feed to be held Sunday, March 15, at the Callaway Community Center. The meal will include spaghetti, salad, and ice cream.
