South Loup Bobcat Boys Runner-Up at Overton Invite
The South Loup Bobcat Boys track & field team brought home their first trophy of the season with the runner-up trophy at the April 19 Overton Invitational. The Bobcats really excelled in the field events, and of the field events, Coach Weverka's throwers excelled to another level. The performance of the day came in the discus as senior Jake Halstead launched the disc 144 feet, 3 inches, taking gold in the event and breaking the school record previously held by Grant Jones. Lance Jones has been improving throughout the year in the discus and threw his personal best in winning the third place medal with a throw of 39 feet. The shot put trio of Rio Remund, Jake Halstead and Lance Jones excelled as well, as they placed second, third and fifth, respectively.
The pole vaulters also had a great day. Silas Cool, Jamie Tickle and Dawson Mason took first, fourth and fifth with both Cool and Mason recording personal bests. Freshman Harper Johnson also set a personal record on the day as he leapt his way to second place in the high jump. The Bobcats scored 57 points in the field events before the running events began. The boys began the track events similar to the field events by winning the 3200 meter relay, as the quartet of Trey Connell, Cool, Mason and Logan Recoy battled the 40+ MPH winds to take home the first gold medal of the day on the track with their winning time of 9:21.89. While that was the only gold medal in the running events taken by Bobcat competitors, both other relays ran well. The team of Kaden Paulsen, AJ Starr, Ethan Furne and Harper Johnson took silver in the 4 x 100 meter relay and Connelly, Recoy, Johnson and Furne raced their way to bronze in the 1600 relay.
Cool took second in the 800 meter, Recoy ran to second in the 1600 meters. Mason and Caleb McFate went fifth and sixth in the 300 meter hurdles. The wind made the day a tough day for all athletes, and the Bobcats showed resilience in overcoming the tough conditions to compete well, making a horribly windy day a little better.
The Bobcats are in action again on April 28 at Arnold for the MNAC Meet. The meet will run concurrently with the junior high MNAC track meet. The first events will begin at 9:30 a.m. with junior high running events in the morning and high school field events. At 12:30 p.m., high school running events and junior high field events will begin. All junior high events will be finals only while high school events will be dual-session.
