The South Loup Bobcats sent four student-athletes to the Nebraska State Track & Field Championships last week and brought home one medal.

Logan Recoy, Ella Cool, Charli Vickers, and Ethan Furne all qualified for the state meet in Class C based on their times and/or finish at the C-8 district meet in Ord on May 9. Recoy qualified in both the 400m and 800m runs after running the fastest times of his career in both events at districts and winning the silver medal in both.

Competition on the big stage at Burke Stadium in Omaha was tough with nine districts in Class C and hundreds of competitors. In his last competition as a South Loup athlete, Recoy picked up the only state medal for the Bobcats, bettering his district meet time in the 800m. His time of 2:02.33 was good enough to get him on the medal stand in 8th place. Unfortunately, he was not able to compete in the 400m due to injury.

Furne competed in the long jump, where his best jump of the day of 20-06.25 earned him 12th place. Furne will return again next season for his senior year.

Vickers also completed her career as a South Loup Bobcat at the state track meet, competing in the 300m hurdles. Her time of 50.81 put her in 22nd place overall.

Cool, a junior, finished 23rd in the 3200m run with a time of 13:58.84. Next week we will recap the highlights and successes of the 2024 South Loup track and field season.
