Callaway Alum Earns College Rodeo Honors
SUMBITTED BY ANGIE KUNKEE Dalton Kunkee is a 2021 graduate of Callaway High School and is currently attending South Dakota State University where he is studying to become a cattle nutritionist. Dalton was a qualifier in the steer wrestling at the College National Finals Rodeo held last month in Casper Wyoming.
Dalton was recognized and awarded the Walt Garrison Award that is given through the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. This award is given to a college rodeo athlete who possesses numerous qualities that are part of the cowboy code of ethics including loyalty, commitment, honesty, perseverance, and leadership. The award was established in honor of former Dallas Cowboys football player and professional rodeo cowboy Walt Garrison. This is one of the most prestigious awards given in college rodeo.
Dalton is captain of the SDSU rodeo team and is a student director for his college rodeo region, the Great Plains Region. Dalton also received the George Howard Memorial Scholarship and the Rawhide Scholarship which are based on positive characteristics, and balancing academics, career goals, and rodeo.
