The South Loup track teams are Burke-bound again this season!

Following a strong showing by both teams at the C-8 District tournament at Southern Valley on Thursday, 10 athletes - 6 boys and 4 girls - qualified for the state meet at Burke High School in Omaha May 19-20.

The top two placers in individual events and the top relay teams automatically qualified for state. Additional qualifiers were added if they were one of the top 6 fastest times in running events and top 6 distances of field events of non-qualifiers in Class C.

Boys coach Lane Chesley is sad to see the season end for most of his team, but ready to head to Omaha for the big show.

“A season of hard work has come to an end for all except the 6 who qualified,” he said.

The boys 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams both qualified for state with their gold medal finishes. The 4x400 team of Cool, Pandorf, Recoy, and Cache Gracey finished in a time of 3:36.85.

Cool, a senior who is attending the state meet for the third time, is also running in the 800-meters. He finished 1st at districts with a time of 2:09.99, nearly a full second ahead of the next runner.

“The feeling after running is great,” Cool said. “I’m excited to get to do it one more time.”

The 4x800 team of Trey Connell, Dylan Pandorf, Logan Recoy, and Silas Cool finished with a time of 8:34.83. Their finish at districts puts them in 8th place for state.

Pandorf, the lone freshman who qualified for the state meet, said he is both excited and nervous. “I’m ready to run again,” he said.

“He has had one of the strongest freshman seasons I can remember,” said Coach Chesley.

Gracey will also run the 400-meter race in Omaha. He finished 1st at districts with a time of 51.37. He is in the 2nd heat for Friday’s race. He was fighting a muscle strain at districts, but ran through it to qualify in two events.

Distance runner Logan Recoy will run in the 1600-meter race, as well. He finished 2nd at districts with a time of 4:55.64. Recoy faced a difficult day at districts running back-to-back races and still qualifying for the state meet.

Rio Remund finished 4th at districts in the shot put, but his throw of 49’9.5” was enough to sneak in as an additional qualifier for the state meet. That distance at districts is 3.5 inches less than his personal record. His throw at districts puts him in 18th place for state. He will throw Friday morning in the first heat.

Senior Talli Martin will make her second appearance at state, this time in the 1600-meter and 3200-meter races. She finished 1st in the 1600 and 2nd in the 3200. She will run the 3200 on Friday and the 1600 on Saturday.

This is Martin’s second appearance at state track, and she said she is excited to compete one last time as a Bobcat.

Charli Vickers also qualified for two events - the

100-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. She finished 3rd in the 100 hurdles at districts, but her time qualified her for state. She finished 2nd at districts in the 300 hurdles with a new personal record time of

49.51 seconds. She will run both races on Friday.

Sophomore Ivy Tullis finished 2nd at districts in the

800-meter run and will compete on Saturday in the first heat. Her time at districts was 2:33.91, one-third of a second off her best time.

Abby Stallbaumer will throw in the 3rd heat of the discus on Friday around noon. She is ranked 2nd in state with her distance of 137’6” at districts. That is her season- best throw and 14 inches off her personal best.
