Bobcats Burn Up The Track Despite Poor Weather
The South Loup track teams have had a very busy week, competing at the Hershey/St Pat’s Invite on Tuesday and the Burwell Invitational on Friday. Both days culminated in more successes for the teams and more hardware to showcase.
Tuesday’s meet at Hershey was rescheduled from earlier in the season after Mother Nature dumped snow on the track, but Tuesday’s weather conditions were only slightly better than the original meet date. With little humidity, high temperatures, and unforgiving winds, the Bobcats battled through for a third place finish for both the boys and girls teams.
The boys 4x400 relay team of freshman Dylan Pandorf, juniors Cache Gracey and Logan Recoy, and senior Silas Cool broke the meet record with a time of 3:36.72 and a gold medal. This time was nearly 10 seconds faster than the second place team and a season record.
Gracey also brought home the gold in the 400-meter with a time of 51.96 seconds. The 4x800 relay team of Trey Connell, Pandorf, Recoy, and Cool also finished first with a time of 8:49.10, nearly 45 seconds ahead of the runner-up team.
Recoy raced into 2nd place in the 1600-meter with a time of 4:55.80.
Freshman Conner Paulsen finished 6th in both the 100-meter and 200-meter races.
Crew Witthuhn set a personal record in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 17.1 seconds and a 4th place finish. He also set a new PR in the 300 hurdles with a 5th place finish and time of 47.02 seconds. Caleb McFate also set a new PR with a time of 18.9 seconds and 6th place finish in the 110 high hurdles, and finished 7th in the 300 hurdles with a time of 49.62 seconds.
The 4x100 relay team finished in 3rd with a time of 47.15 seconds. Members include Ethan Furne, Paulsen, Cool, and AJ Starr.
Rio Remund had an outstanding day in the field with a 2nd place finish in shot put with a throw of 49’3.25” and a new PR. He also finished 5th in discus with a throw of 117’5”. Furne set a new PR with a jump of 19’5” in the long jump for a 4th place finish. Pandorf also set a new PR in the triple jump with a distance of 39’8”.
Senior Talli Martin led the distance runners for the Lady Bobcats with gold medals in the 1600-meters and 3200-meters. Ella Cool finished 3rd in each race, as well.
Charli Vickers also nabbed double gold medals in the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles with times of 17.20 seconds and 51.15 seconds, and a new PR in both. Ivy Tullis placed 3rd in the 400-meters with a time of 1:06.40 and a 5th place finish in the 800-meters with a time of 2:57.96.
The girls 4x100 relay raced into 3rd place with a time of 55.22 seconds. Members include Fitzgerald, Josie Reiff, Vickers, and Hailey Recoy.
Senior Abby Stallbaumer placed 2nd in the discus with a throw of 121’2”. Reiff had a 4th place finish in the long jump with a distance of 14’6” and triple jumpers Ava Pandorf and Aubree Birkel placed 4th and 5th, respectively.
Up at Burwell on Friday, the cold weather and stiff competition from West Holt (Atkinson) gave the Bobcats some hiccups to overcome.
Both teams finished fourth - the boys with 66 points, behind Sandhills/Thedford with 67 points, Arcadia/Loup City with 103.5 points, and West Holt with 190 points. The girls tallied 96 points behind Arcadia/Loup City, Riverside and West Holt.
Gracey nabbed his fourth gold medal in the 400 meters with a time of 52.18 seconds. Gracey was also the anchor for the 4x400 relay that guaranteed the gold-medal finish with a time of 3:37.71. Other members of the relay team include Silas Cool, Logan Recoy, and Paulsen.
Logan Recoy ran his fastest time of this season in the 1600-meters at 4:55.33, nearly 4 seconds faster than the runner-up.
Silas Cool earned his third gold medal of the season in the 800-meters with a time of 2:10.22. Cool provided the anchor for the 4x800 relay team, which had their fastest time of the season at 8:46.85, and a second-place finish.
Connell finished 7th in the 800 with a time of 2:20.23.
Paulsen set a new personal record in the 100-meter prelims with a time of 12.00 seconds and a chance to run in the finals. His finals time was 12.18 seconds and an 8th place finish.
Out in the field, senior Lance Jones had a strong day throwing, finishing first in shot put with a throw of 42’10” and second in discus with a toss of 138’1”. Clay Witthuhn set a new personal record in discus with a throw of 99’6 '. Sophomore Dawson Mason finished 8th in the pole vault with a height of 9’0”. Furne sailed into 5th place in the long jump with a distance of 19’1.75” and Pandorf finished 6th in the triple jump with a distance of 37’7”.
The Lady Bobcats were led by Talli Martin with gold-medal finishes in the 1600-meters with a time of 5:55.87, and a gold in the 3200-meters at 12:42.21. Ella Cool finished 3rd in both the 1600 and 3200, as well.
Charli Vickers advanced to finals in the 100-meters, with a time of 13.82 and a 7th place finish. Vickers also made it to finals in the 100 hurdles with a 4th place finish and time of 17.50 seconds. She also finished in 7th in the 300 hurdles with a time of 53.97.
Halie Recoy, coming off a foot injury, missed finals in the 100 by less than half of a second.
Freshman Erin Fitzgerald placed 7th in the 400-meters with a time of 1:07.38 and placed 8th in the long jump with a distance of 13’5.5”.
Fitzgerald also helped propel the 4x800 relay into a gold finish with a time of 11:37.38. Other members of the relay team include Ava Pandorf, Ivy Tullis and Ella Cool.
Tullis set a new personal record in the 800 with a time of 2:44.36.
