Bobcats Avenge Early Season Loss, Move on in Playoffs
On Thursday, Oct. 24, the South Loup Bobcats scored a 22-14 victory in a firstround playoff matchup against the Perkins County Plainsmen in the NSAA State Football Championships (Class D1) tournament.
The game began with both teams exchanging defensive stands, resulting in a scoreless first quarter. However, the Bobcats broke the deadlock in the second quarter, with junior Conner Paulsen finding the end zone on a 10-yard rushing touchdown. The team then converted the 2-point attempt, bringing the score to 8-0. South Loup’s momentum continued as they added another touchdown just before halftime, with senior Ethan Furne catching a 61-yard pass from junior Dylan Pandorf. The Bobcats headed into halftime with a solid 16-0 lead.
Perkins County rallied in the second half, attempting to get in the lead. However, South Loup maintained control, scoring an additional touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Paulsen demonstrated his skill with another impressive 11-yard run, further extending the Bobcats’ lead to 22-0.
Despite a late surge from Perkins County, who managed to score two touchdowns in the final quarter, they were not able to surpass the Bobcat’s early lead.
The defense held strong, ultimately securing the 22-14 win.
“Vengeance was served,” Furne said Defensively, South Loup was relentless, scoring a remarkable 71 total tackles.
Senior AJ Starr led the defensive effort with 16 tackles, while Pandorf added an important interception, further highlighting the team’s impressive play.
With this hard-fought victory, the Bobcats continue their playoff journey, proving their resilience and ability to perform under pressure.
The Bobcats next play on Friday, Nov. 1, as they meet 8-1 Summerland (Clearwater/ Ewing/Orchard) at Ewing. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
