Bobcat Tracksters Find Success at Burwell
The South Loup Bobcat men’s and women’s track teams headed east last week to take on the Burwell Invitational on Friday, April 18. The Bobcats found plenty of success in the field and on the track despite cooler temperatures and gusty winds.
The Lady Bobcats stole the show for the day, bringing home three gold medals, one silver and three bronzes against a field of 12 teams. They finished in third overall on the day, chalking up 88 points across 13 events. Plainview took the first-place trophy with 99 points, and Burwell placed second with 91.
Erin and Olivia Fitzgerald both had a banner day in the sprints, pushing each other to the top in both the 100 and 200-meter races. Erin took gold in both events, and Olivia placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively, clocking a personal best in the 200. EvaLynn Wonch did a fantastic job on the field, throwing a personal best in the discus that earned her a gold medal in the event, while Emma Stallbaumer took bronze with a PB of her own.
The men’s team also nabbed third-place overall, competing against 13 teams. Individually, they collected three silver medals and one bronze, ending the day with 67 points overall. Anselmo-Merna took the top spot with 119 points, and Arcadia-Loup City ranked second with 93.
The boys did their best work in the distance races, with Walter Bierman (800m), Elijah Cool (1600m) and Josiah Coleman (3200m) each collecting the silver medal for their efforts. Bierman finished just a few seconds behind the first-place runner and fought hard for second place against Nigel Addison from Stuart, crossing the line just one-tenth of a second ahead of him.
This week’s meet was held on Tuesday, April 21 at Overton, with results to be posted in next week’s Courier. Next on the schedule will be the Conference meet, held Friday, May 1 at Arnold.
