Basketball Season Comes To a Close For Lady Bobcats
The South Loup Lady Bobcats (15-7) saw the end to their season on Tuesday with a loss to Southern Valley in the second round of the C2-11 sub district tournament at Southern Valley High School.
The Lady Bobcats beat the Lady Sailors of Sutherland 56-30 on Monday during the first round of play. While the buckets were slow to drop in the beginning of the first quarter, by the end of the first quarter, the Lady Bobcats led 12-9.
The Lady Bobcat defense kept the Lady Sailors from scoring and kept grabbing rebounds to head into halftime leading 25-16. The third quarter, the Lady Sailors attempted to close the gap by scoring 12 points, but the Lady Bobcats added 15 of their own to keep the lead. The fourth quarter saw the strongest defense from the Lady Bobcats all day, allowing the Lady Sailors to only drop two buckets - both free throws.
Tuesday was a much different game for the Lady Bobcats, with a season-ending defeat by Southern Valley, 30-54. This time it was the Lady Bobcats who felt the pain of missed shots and missed rebound opportunities that brought their season to its finale.
True to their nature this entire season, the Lady Bobcats saw what needed to be fixed and made adjustments to their play after being outscored 4-12 in the first quarter. Despite scoring 10 points in the second quarter, the Lady Bobcats headed into halftime down 8 points, 14-22. During the third quarter, the Lady Bobcats added 9 more points, but the Lady Eagles added 14 points to their widening gap. After being outscored in the fourth quarter 17-10, the Lady Bobcats were unable to come up with the win.
Senior Ava Pandorf scored 9 points, including two 3-pointers, and Lauryn Johnson also scored 9 points. Bryn Schwarz scored 6 points for the Lady Bobcats.
In a season plagued by injuries, including seniors Taylor Ross and Halie Recoy and juniors Delaney Rogers and Maggie Birkel, the Lady Bobcats finish with a 15-7 record. Highlights of the season include winning the MNAC (Mid-Nebraska Activities Conference) championship, having a 7-game winning streak, and beating longtime rivals, Anselmo-Merna by 2 points in their last home game of the season.
The Lady Bobcats will lose five seniors to graduation this year - Lauryn Johnson, Ava Pandorf, Halie Recoy, Taylor Ross, and Abby Stallbaumer.
