Bobcats See Busy & Successful Week on Mats
Even with the snow causing a postponement of a meet, the Bobcat wrestlers had a full week on the mat with a triangular at Tryon on Thursday and the Amherst Invite on Saturday.
The Bobcat grapplers won both rounds of action against Hyannis and Sandhills Valley on Thursday - by a score of 54-6 against Hyannis and 54-18 over Sandhills Valley.
At 138 pounds, CJ Quandt pinned Daniel Taylor in 1:38 and at 160 pounds, Jamie Tickle was pinned by Ezekiel Heaton in 1:37. Heaton was a state qualifier last year at D138.
Wrestlers earning forfeit points over Hyannis were Josiah Coleman at 106 pounds; Zane Ellison at 113 pounds; Paxton Bierman at 120 pounds; Bo Brennan at 126 pounds; Dawson Mason at 132 pounds; Dylan Handley at 145 pounds; Jamie Tickle at 160 pounds; Kyle Bloomer at 182 pounds; and Dawson Doggett at 195 pounds.
Against the Sandhills Valley Mavericks, the Bobcats had three matches - at 160 pounds, Tickle pinned Killian Rooney in 1:24; at 195 pounds Doggett pinned Kaden Blake in 2:16; and Handley was pinned by Conner Weekly in 1:06. The rest of the team had forfeit wins.
At Amherst on Saturday, two Bobcats brought home fourth place hardware for their efforts on the day.
At 106 pounds, Coleman (13-6) pinned Giovanni Ramirez of Gibbon in 3:44; was pinned by Micah Gerlach of Cambridge in 3:40; and was stuck by Clayton Scoville of SEM in 1:44. Scoville was a state qualifier last year in D106.
Bierman (12-9) was pinned in the quarterfinal round by Sebastian Sauceda of Shelton in 2:31 (Sauceda placed third at state last year in D106); then Bierman pinned Braden Erickson of Kenesaw in 2:19 in the second round of consolations; and fell to Talen Roland of Amherst in 2:25 in the third consolation round.
Also at 113 pounds, Zane Ellison (7-10) lost both matches of the day - first to Morgan Bunner of Clarkson/Leigh in 3:41 and then to Dylan Furstenau of Neligh-Oakdale by major decision 12-1. Bunner was a state qualifier last year in C113.
Brennan (16-7) brought home a fourth-place medal at 120 pounds with a win over Carson Whitesel of Neilgh-Oakdale in 1:42; a hard-fought loss to Easton Malleck of Amherst in 5:03; a win over Isaac Shields of Amherst in 1:47; and a third-period loss to Mitchel Stritt of Southwest in 4:26.
At 132 pounds, Mason (15-5) had a third-period loss to Trevor Schroeder of Amherst in 5:00; won by medical forfeit over Dominic Kyle of Overton; won a 6-minute match against Prestin Horwart of Southern Valley 7-2; and was pinned by Jarrett Wells of Anselmo-Merna in 2:44.
Quandt (12-10) was pinned by Ty Greenland of Arcadia/ Loup City in 1:24; got a quick pin against Gavin Hammond of Southwest in 0:55; and was pinned by Dylan Higby of Clarkson/Leigh in 1:51.
Handley (3-11) at 145 pounds was pinned by Adam Corbett of Cambridge in 1:22; and by Ethan Oberg of Hi-Line in 2:17. Corbett was a state qualifier last year in D138.
In his second meet of the year, Tickle (2-3) pinned Harley Gray of Medicine Valley in 1:58; fell to Ben Mcgee of Amherst in 2:28; and was pinned by Kaden Stunkel of Ansley Litchfield in 2:58.
At 182 pounds, Bloomer (2-10) fell to Zach Cahill of Plainview in 0:35; and to Gabe Huntley in 1:17. The other team placer was Doggett at 195 pounds, who brought home a fourth-place medal. He pinned Grady Puls of Hi-Line in 0:50; beat Aspen Henderson of Medicine Valley in 1:19; fell to Brody Bogard of Amherst in 3:50; won by decision of 8-4 over Grayson Petersen of Plainview; and lost by decision 5-3 to Chase Thomas of Neligh-Oakdale. The Bobcats traveled to Dunning on Tuesday for a rescheduled triangular. The results were not available by press time. Friday the team travels to SEM for their annual wrestling invitational.
