Large Litter of Bobcats Compete at State Meet
It was a great showing for the Bobcats, as the South Loup track and field team qualified nine boys and nine girls in seven events each, for the Nebraska State Track and Field Championships in Omaha this past weekend.
Up against the best athletes in the state, the Bobcats came home with only one medal. EvaLynn Wonch, a junior, hurled the discus 120’ 9” to earn the 5th place medal.
Senior Erin Fitzgerald ended her stellar career at South Loup by qualifying in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay. Unfortunately, Erin did not advance to finals in either the 100m or 200m, turning in a time of 13.28 in the 100m for 19th place, and 27.53 in the 200m for 15th place. Erin’s skills aren't just limited to the track - she also qualified in long jump. Her best jump of the day was 15’ 5.5”, good for 17th place overall.
Joining Erin on the 4x100 relay team were Asa Starr, Rae Hagler, and Olivia Fitzgerald. The team ran a time of 51.93, good for 10th place. Erin is the only senior on that team.
Hagler also competed in the 300m hurdles, where her time of 51.35 landed her in 19th position.
The 4x800m relay team of Jade Bierman, Lynae Wiese, Chloe Coleman, and Delanie Weinman, finished just off the podium in 9th place with a time of 10:34.05. Weinman is a sophomore while the other three team members are just freshmen.
The same was true of the boys’ 4x800 relay team. With a time of 8:41.39, Dylan Pandorf, Walter Bierman, Jaden Baker, and Elijah Cool finished in 9th place. Pandorf is the lone senior on the relay squad.
Pandorf also ran a leg of the men’s 4x100 relay, along with fellow senior Conner Paulsen, junior Noah Anderson, and freshman Braxton Cozad. Their time of 45.59 put them in 15th place. The senior competed in long jump as well, with his best leap of the day of 18’ 11” found him in 20th place.
Elijah Cool, a junior, came in 12th in the 1600m with a time of 4:47.88, his personal best.
In the 110m hurdles, it was freshman Hudson Vickers representing the Bobcats. His personal best time of 16.09 was good for 11th place. Vickers also qualified in high jump, where he cleared the bar at 5’ 11”, which also landed him in 11th place.
Finally, senior Josiah Coleman competed in the 3200m. His time of 11:14.23 placed him 21st overall.
