Spring is a wonderful season. Everything is turning green, trees are leafing out and flowers are beginning to bloom. Typically, the warmer temperatures are a much-anticipated reprieve from the harshness of winter, but this year, winter seems to have skipped Nebraska!

Along with the newness of life in our yards and on the farms, it is also a very busy time of year. A host of school activities and graduations keep parents and grandparents hopping from one thing to another during the month of May. Throw birthdays and an important holiday like Mother’s Day into the mix, and it’s enough to make anyone lose track of things.

In fact, as I write this I am on the heels of a long road trip to Minnesota for a niece’s college graduation, and I have a grandson graduating in Lincoln Memorial Day weekend. Also this month I have been to Doniphan to watch a grandson shoot state trap, to Lincoln to watch our senior grandson play his final jazz concert, and to Columbus to watch a young grandson play baseball. I keep thinking surely life will slow down at some point…will it though? And if I’m being honest do I want it to?

In case you didn’t know it, I am very much a Type A personality. I like to be busy, and I really like to be in control. That’s not always a trait I am proud of and have had to learn to try to harness that in order to play well with others. You might say, I am still a work in progress in that area!

To me, Spring is also a reminder of another year gone by. And it seems as though those just keep coming faster all the time. A few months ago I shared my recent enrollment in Medicare (not by choice). I recently had my first Medicare “wellness check”. What in the heck was that about?

I thought I was going in for my annual physical. Not so much. The only thing the doctor even looked at was my feet…yes, my feet! I suppose that is because I am diabetic, but I digress.

The visit consisted primarily of a whole lot of questions, and I’m sure many of you reading this are shaking your heads in agreement right now. There were a few times throughout the interview that I literally laughed. Not even so much at the questions themselves, but more at the fact that I find myself here when I don’t feel like I am supposed to be yet!

Yes, I can feed and bathe myself just fine. I still work more hours a week than I care to even think about for goodness sakes! That being said, I’m sure it would make me very sad to know how many people on Medicare do have to worry about having enough food or paying for their medications, or even being safe in their homes.

Fortunately, all my labs came back great and doctor says I am healthy as can be. Good thing - because I have a whole lot of places to go and things to do!
