Over the past couple of months, Syndicate Publishing has handed off our Cozad Local and Minden Courier publications to new owners.

Thankfully, local owners, backed by the support of local economic development and chamber organizations, were able to step in to ensure those communities continued to have a local newspaper.

The reason for this change should not be a surprise to anyone.

Local newspapers today face challenges that did not exist even a decade ago. Rising costs, changing advertising habits, and the shift to digital consumption have made it increasingly difficult for small, community- based publications to survive, let alone thrive. This is not unique to us; it is happening across the country.

And yet, in Gothenburg and Callaway, the communities have shown up. You read the paper. You support the businesses that advertise. You support the small but mighty staff we employ to bring you the paper each week.

You recognize the value of having a reliable, local source of news that covers your schools, your municipal government, your neighbors, and your stories.

We are deeply grateful for that. But it is important to say plainly: even with that support, our newspapers are not profitable. They never have been. We have continued to publish them because we believe they matter. Because strong communities deserve strong local journalism.

We also believe in the people behind these pages. The employees who gather the stories, sell the ads, design the layouts, and make sure each issue reaches your hands are committed to producing a quality product week after week. That level of quality does not happen by accident, and it does not come without cost.

If these newspapers are going to continue, they will only do so with ongoing, active support from the communities they serve.

That support takes many forms. It is choosing to subscribe rather than relying on secondhand information or social media. It is supporting local businesses that advertise in these pages. It is recognizing that when you invest in your local newspaper, you are investing in the community itself.

We are committed to continuing this work in Gothenburg and Callaway. We are proud of the product we put out each week, and we believe it reflects the strength and character of these communities.

But the future of these newspapers will ultimately be determined not by us alone, but by all of us.

We are thankful for the support you have shown. And we ask, candidly and sincerely, that it continue.

Because once a local newspaper is gone, it rarely comes back.

And communities are never quite the same without it.
