The Callaway Board of Education met on Monday, April 11 with a fairly short agenda. One of the primary items of discussion, which did result in action being taken, was the replacement of the school’s boiler system - an item that has been at the forefront of board discussion for a few months.

Following an explanation on the status of the project from district Superintendent Bryon Hanson, the board approved a contract with Rutt's Heating and Cooling for replacement of the boiler at Callaway Public Schools. The vote was 6-0 and construction will start immediately after the students are dismissed for summer break.

Due to the age of the building and current boiler system, the contractor ran into an issue with asbestos as well. The board voted to approve a contract with Great Plains Asbestos Control Inc. They will be starting on May 18 and will be removing the asbestos from the boiler room prior to construction.

In one personnel related item, approval was unanimous to retain Heath Birkel as Principal and offer a principal contract to him for the 2022-2023 school year.

During his report to the board, Principal Birkel shared the school’s State FCCLA Results, State FFA Results, Inter-High Day Results and information on the Down Syndrome Awareness Day Event. Birkel also shared that three students participated in the National State History Day event in Lincoln; and the district had four students qualify for the State Speech meet where Izzy Staulbaumer was the State Champion in her event.

In his board report, Superintendent Hanson shared that Summer Learning Camp will start June 6 and run through June 30. The format will be similar to last year’s camp.
