Bobcats Bring Home Conference Champion and Runner-Up
The South Loup men’s and women’s track teams competed in the Mid-Nebraska Activities Conference (MNAC) meet on Friday, May 2, held in Arnold. The Bobcats had a great day, with the men’s team finishing as conference champions and the Lady Bobcats coming home with the conference runner-up plaque.
“The conference track meet went better than any of the coaches could have expected! This meet was the first time we loaded up events and tried to score as many points as possible, and it worked out great,” said Coach Andy Schwarz.
The boy's team scored 155 points, compared to the second-place team's 79. “It was great to see the team rally behind each other in our quest for our fifth straight conference championship. I really think we are hitting our stride in preparation for our district meet! Our athletes are happy and healthy,” an exuberant Coach Schwarz added.
For the men’s team, it was the distance runners once again leading the way for the Bobcats, as they claimed the gold and silver medals in both the 1600 and 3200. It was also a gold medal-winning performance for the 4x100 relay team, pole vault - where the Bobcats took the top three places - and long jump.
Highlights for the ladies included the Fitzgerald sisters, who came in 1 and 2 in the 200m, two silver medals for the relay teams, and gold in both the high jump and long jump. The Lady Bobcats also had a couple of notable disappointments, as the favorite in the 1600 - Ella Cool - scratched, and the 4x100 relay team was also disqualified.
