Bobcat Track Teams Collect Hardware Galore
The South Loup boys’ and girls’ track teams traveled to Burwell on Thursday, April 17, to compete in a 13-team tournament. The Bobcats had a good day, with the boys finishing third in the team standings and the girls ending the day in fourth place overall.
The Lady Bobcats once again demonstrated their speed with junior Erin Fitzgerald and freshman Olivia Fitzgerald garnering several medals in the sprint races. Olivia claimed the silver in the 100m with a time of 13.46, while Erin took the gold in the 200m (27.61), and Olivia nabbed the bronze in that race. Erin also earned the 4th place medal in the 400m.
Ella Cool added another gold medal to her collection in the 1600m as she turned in her best time yet of 5:53.02.
The 4x100 relay team, consisting of the Fitzgerald sisters, Jimi Fletcher, and Asa Starr, earned the silver medal with a time of 53.75. The 4x400 team of Delanie Weinman, Cool, Starr, and Jade Bierman grabbed the bronze medal, clocking a time of 4:36.57.
Cool, Weinman, Anna Coleman, and Bierman earned the 5th place medal in the 4x800 relay in a time of 11:33.24. Bierman finished 7th in the 800m, while Rae Hagler came in 8th in the 100m hurdles and 6th in the 300m hurdles.
In field events, Erin Fitzgerald had her best long jump to date of 15’ 11” to claim the gold medal in that event, while Starr also got a PR in triple jump of 4’ 8” to win the silver medal. Bierman finished 5th in the triple jump. EvaLynn Wonch had her best day yet in the discus with a toss of 106’ 11” to earn the 5th place medal.
Ethan Furne had a great day for the boys’ team, getting a PR in the 100m and the long jump and coming home with a total of four medals - one of them gold. He finished 4th in the 100m (11.33), was one leg of the silver medalist 4x100 relay team and bronze medalist 4x400 relay team, and leaped 22’ 0.5” in long jump for the gold.
Other members of the 4x100 relay team were Dylan Pandorf, AJ Starr, and Conner Paulsen. Pandorf and Starr also joined Furne on the 4x400 relay along with Dawson Mason. The 4x800 relay team earned the bronze medal for Walter Bierman, Jaden Baker, Elijah Cool, and Eli Rogers.
Pandorf ran his fastest time to date in the 400m to finish 4th, and Cool finished 4th in the 800m. Josiah Coleman picked up the bronze medal in the 3200m and finished 5th in the 1600m. CJ Quandt and Uatong Haidle both PRd in the 300m hurdles to finish 6th and 7th.
The Bobcats had a good showing in the pole vault, where Dawson Mason cleared 11’ 06” for the bronze medal, Haidle vaulted 10’ 06” for 6th place, and Bierman cleared an even 10’ for 8th place.
Starr cleared the bar at 5’ 06” to finish 5th in the high jump, and Pandorf leaped 38’ 10” for 5th place in the triple jump.
The teams competed in Overton on Tuesday; however, results were not available at press time. They now have a long break before the MNAC meet on Friday, May 2, at Arnold. Events begin at 10 a.m.
