Senator Storer Introduces AM 810 to Brand Law Proposal

LINCOLN – As floor debate approaches for the controversial LB 646, a bill proposing to exempt feedlots under the Nebraska Livestock Brand Act at the expense of cow calf producers, Senator Storer introduces AM 810 to LB 646. Citing the lack of sufficient input from the cow-calf industry and the Brand Committee, Senator Storer’s compromise highlights the importance of livestock inspection in protecting Nebraska's leading cash commodity, the cattle industry.

Senator Storer states, 'I oppose LB 646 as introduced as well as AM638. Every organization representing cattle producers testified in opposition to the bill. Neither the cow-calf industry nor the Brand Committee tasked with the enforcement of the Brand Act were sufficiently represented in this policy discussion.' Senator Storer’s amendment seeks to rectify the exclusion of the stakeholders impacted by LB 646.

Senator Storer has introduced AM 810 to replace the current language of LB 646 and find a consensus solution to modernize Nebraska’s Brand Act with all segments of the cattle industry represented.

Specifically, AM 810 mandates the Nebraska Brand Committee to develop a comprehensive report with recommendations for updating fees and inspections across all sectors of the livestock industry. This report is to be electronically delivered to the Clerk of the Legislature by Dec. 31, 2025.

Senator Storer emphasizes that AM810 will facilitate meaningful discussions across the industry to evaluate any potential changes to the Brand Act. 'Cattle are Nebraska’s most valuable cash commodity. I am fighting for the integrity of the Brand Act and its protection against fraud and theft provided through our proof of ownership inspection system,' Senator Storer affirms.
