Frederick ‘Fred’ Dean Morrison, age 84 of O’Neill, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2024, at home surrounded by family. Fred was born on April 27, 1940, in Arnold to George E. and Dorothy M. (Booker) Morrison. 

Fred grew up and attended schools in Callaway, Arnold, Lawton, Oklahoma, and Kimball. He graduated from Callaway High School. On July 12, 1958, he married Marilyn Spangler in Callaway. Fred enjoyed all sports and played football, basketball and ran track. Fred started his working career with the Jorgeson Well Company in Callaway, he also worked on an oil rig. In 1963, he started working for the Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas company in Sargent. His time with the gas company took him and his family to Broken Bow, Ainsworth, Randolph and O’Neill. He retired from the gas company in 1998 as regional manager.  

Fred was a member of the Bassett Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, serving several years as the Fire Chief. Fred enjoyed playing golf in the summer and bowling in the winter. After retirement, he enjoyed model railroading and his grandkids fondly remember him as Grandpa Choo-Choo. 

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Marilyn; children, Keith (Alicia) Morrison of Nebraska City, Daniel (Debbie) Morrison of Bassett, Glen (Marcy) Morrison of Omaha, and Dale (Kristin) Morrison of Randolph; 13 grandchildren; 14 (plus one on the way) great-grandchildren; and brother, Robert (Pam) Morrison of Loveland, Colorado. 

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Donna (Jerald) Cantrell; great-granddaughters, Ember and Estel (Grant and Carly Morrison’s daughters). 

His funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Callaway Rose Hill Cemetery with Pastor Karla Sheffy, officiating. Memorials are being established with various local fire departments.
