Thank You For Reading For Six Years
Six years. In the spring of 2017, I was given the opportunity to write a column for a local newspaper. While I had dreamed of the opportunity years earlier, I was tentative with my submissions and unsure of my ability. It is hard for me to believe that I’ve been writing this column for six years, which equates to close to 300 submissions. I am so grateful for the opportunity and have learned a few things along the way.
One. Modesty and humility doesn’t always reflect reality. I am still surprised to learn that someone reads my column. When an individual references something I’ve written, I am often caught off guard with the reminder that it was printed for public consumption. “Oh yeah, I did write that. How cool that the message stood out for someone,” I think to myself. It is truly an honor to know that people are reading and that something I share resonates with another. Don’t underestimate the reality of the impact that one makes by simply showing up and being courageous enough to authentically share one’s gifts.
Two. There is no shortage of educational content in the world when one is open. While I would be lying if I told you I never have writer’s block or don’t struggle occasionally to be inspired with something to write on a weekly basis, the wide variety of topics that I have written about over the years blows me away. From my award-winning column about an old pair of jeans to beetles, monarchs, tarantulas and morning glories, I’ve found inspiration in a plethora of ways. Don’t close your heart and mind to the world around you because it is filled with meaningful messages and insights.
Three. Being vulnerable is scary and is the type of courage the world needs. I have written about deep struggles in my life, shared about personal flaws and addressed challenging social issues. It has taken vulnerability that solicited hand-written, anonymous notes from others who are hurting. Unable to respond to the individual message, I am compelled to keep writing the next column. Sharing my truths and self-awareness has allowed me to hear from others who share similar views or struggles. Don’t forget that you are not alone and others need to hear that you feel, struggle and believe the way they do.
So, for today, I am grateful for six years. I am thankful for the opportunity to have my column printed not only in one local newspaper, but four area newspapers. Above all, I want to thank every single person who has read the column, who opens his/her heart and mind to be impacted by the words, and who takes time to share comments with me along the way.
