Body

On Saturday afternoon, July 26, members of the Robert D. Booker family gathered at Rose Hill Cemetery near Callaway for a special Nebraska Medal of Honor Recipient Wreath presentation. They were joined by several American Legion Post #59 members, American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit #59 members, and other Legion and Auxiliary members from neighboring communities who were paying their respects to a local serviceman.

Private Robert D. Booker of Callaway was killed in action while serving in the US Army during World War II. The local American Legion Post bears his name, in part, the Bryson-Booker Post #59.

The Nebraska Medal of Honor Recipient Wreath project began when Vicki Ozenbaugh of Ohiowa was serving as Nebraska's ALA Department President in 2022-2023. Her Presidential project was to create and place a patriotic wreath for each Nebraska Medal of Honor Recipient. The large faux greenery wreaths are decorated with patriotic ribbons, flowers, a small American flag and the recipients branch of service flag.

Each wreath bears a laminated tag on the back with the recipient's name and service information. Each wreath has been decorated by a member of Ms. Ozenbaugh's Auxiliary Unit #193.

At each wreath placement ceremony, Ms. Ozenbaugh speaks of the history of the Medal of Honor, explains her project and tells a short story of the recipient's service and why they were chosen for the Medal of Honor.

On display was a map of Nebraska that was created to show each Medal of Honor recipient's grave site location. To date, she has placed 23 wreaths and will continue until all 33 of Nebraska's Medal of Honor recipients have been honored with her project.

Callaway Auxiliary Unit #59 will be accountable for displaying the wreath at Private Booker's grave on appropriate holidays. During the ceremony, the American Legion Post #59 was present with a color guard. After the placement of the wreath the Military Gun Salute was given followed by the playing of 'Taps'.

Following the ceremony, all were invited to gather at the Callaway Legion Hall for fellowship and refreshments courtesy of ALA Unit #59.
