Setting a Good Example For Our Kids is a Parent's Job
Last week, my husband and I joined friends for dinner at a local restaurant. We get together for a dinner date at least a couple of times a month to visit and catch up. On this particular evening, a young family was seated at a table on the other side of the room, and the two children were running wild around the tables chasing each other. I noticed the wait staff had to swerve out of the way of the kiddos a couple of times.
Now I don’t want to sound like THAT person, but… you have to admit, that was pretty disrespectful.
The truth is, I have noticed a real shift in parenting in the last couple of decades - and I’m sure I am not the only one! A lack of discipline, a sense of entitlement, parents not saying “no” for fear their child won’t like them anymore - it’s all a recipe for disrespectful kids, who eventually become adults.
I know every generation has undoubtedly questioned the way parents raise their children, but this one feels different. Today’s kids are faced with so much more outside influence than past generations, thanks in large part to the Internet and video games.
So, of course, parenting has to look different.
The good news is I am starting to see a change - a bit of a movement, if you will, toward more traditional ways of doing things. At last weekend's Livin’ Out Loud concert in Gothenburg, I noticed two young fathers in the crowd not far from where I was standing in front of the stage. I happened to know them both.
They had their littles hoisted up on their shoulders so they could see the band on the stage, and there they were - worshipping together with their kiddos. Of course, as a reporter, I had to snap a couple of photos. But I wasn’t the only one who noticed!
The band on stage at the time was We Are Messengers, and lead singer Danny Mulligan stopped for a moment, walked to the front of the stage, and pointed out Brian Hogg and Travis Stithem. He thanked them for being good dads and pointed out to the crowd of thousands the importance of the example they were setting for their kids. It gave me chills.
The fact is, when it comes to parenting, none of us gets it all right. We do the best we can with what we have. But remember, you are raising the next generation of leaders. The future might be in their hands, but their future is in yours. Be the example.
