Kite Flight This Weekend
This weekend marks the 34th annual event in Callaway that brings families together and fills the sky with color. The Kite Flight happens every Labor Day weekend at Foster Smith Field, four miles southeast of Callaway on Highway 40. This year’s event will be Aug.
30 and 31.
Over the years, hundreds of kite flyers and spectators have converged each Labor Day weekend on Callaway for the iconic event. Once founder Connie May got it off the ground, the Callaway Chamber of Commerce took up the cause and has continued to spearhead the festivities.
Last year saw the addition of a few new activities to the Kite Flight, and event organizer Kindle Rice confirms that special attractions will be part of this year’s event as well.
Kite flying and activities will be held at the field from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.
There will be a watermelon feed, courtesy of Callaway Market, at 1 p.m. both days. Face painting and a balloon artist will be featured from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, and Superintendent JD Furrow has agreed to be a victim of the dunk tank on Sunday, which will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Delicious BBQ and burgers will be available from Smokin' Double D's BBQ on site, along with sno cones, a lemonade shack, and several other vendors. There will be barrel train rides from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. A catfish fry hosted by the American Legion will be held Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Sand Creek Bar, and No Excuse Bull Riding will be featured Sunday evening at the rodeo grounds. Gates open at 6 p.m. and action gets underway at 7 p.m. Concessions will be available on the grounds.
The always popular night kite flight will take place Saturday at 10 p.m. Invite all your friends and family for this fun-filled Labor Day tradition.
