Honoring Booker Post’s Last World War II Veteran
In the early morning of Feb. 3, Doug Boldt and Bill Schaad departed Callaway for Lincoln to attend the Veterans Legislative Day at the State Capitol. They picked up the Custer County Commander Edith Deuel in Gibbon on the way.
Governor Pillen spoke to the veterans with welcoming remarks. Five senators spoke on the bills that they have presented in this legislative session for veterans: Senator Sanders LB-4 (Homestead Exemption); Senator Blood LB-10 (Vehicle/ Property Tax Exemption); Senator Aguilar LB-80 (DVA Appropriations on GI cemetery); Senator Day LB-126 (Homestead Exemption); and Senator Holdcroft LB-274 (Disabled License Plates/Parking).
Nebraska Veterans Council supports four of the five bills. They don't support LB-274 as it is written.
When the men returned from Lincoln they stopped and visited with Norman Schuster and his wife Betty in their home at Phillips.
“We presented Norman with a certificate for 70 years of continuous membership with Bryson Booker Post 59 of the American Legion,” said Schaad. “It was an honor and privilege to spend these minutes with Norman and will cherish them the rest of my life.”
Norman is the last living World War II member of Bryson Booker Post 59.
