Election Ballot Set; No Challenges in Callaway
Those currently holding elected offices had until Feb. 15 to determine if they wished to serve another term and file for re-election, or give up their seat. Meanwhile, nonincumbents seeking to be on the May 10 ballot had until March 1 to file.
With the filing deadline now past, the Custer County Clerk/Election Commissioner has released the finalized list of candidates. While many of the seats are either uncontested or do not have enough challengers to appear on the primary ballot, a handful of county offices will be decided in the primary.
One of the offices is that of Custer County Assessor, where incumbent Lana Lymber will be challenged by Elise Taylor. The offices of county clerk, county treasurer, county attorney, county sheriff and district court clerk are all being unchallenged with the incumbents in each of those positions opting to remain in that office.
Several newcomers have thrown their hat in the ring for the Custer County Board of Supervisors. The odd numbered districts - Districts 1, 5, 3 and 7 - are all up for reelection this year. Only one of those incumbents, Don Olson, has not filed to remain on the Board. Charles Blowers has filed for that position and will run unopposed. For the District 3 supervisor, Barry Fox filed to retain his seat and will also run unopposed.
Two of the Board of Supervisor seats, however, are being challenged and will therefore be listed on the primary ballot in their respective districts. In District 1, incumbent Bobby Myers is being challenged by Greg Kissell, Carl French and Anne Gibbons. In District 7, incumbent Doug Stunkel will face off against Sara Parliament and Donna Hoblyn-Bittner.
On the local side, three seats are coming up for election on the Callaway Board of Education this year. Incumbents Liana Hrupek- current board president, and TR Anderson have both filed intentions to remain on the board, while newcomer Vincent Guthrie has filed to fill the seat being vacated by Duane Kimball who has chosen not to run again.
The Board of Directors of the Callaway District Hospital has two seats up this year. Incumbents Mary Ross and Mark Kimball have both agreed to remain on the board, and neither seat is being opposed. Both names will appear on the primary ballot.
While the last filing day for non-incumbents was March 1, anyone wishing to pursue a write-in campaign had until March 3 to file that intent. All candidates, offices and issues will be certified by the Secretary of State for placement on the statewide primary ballot by March 18. Primary election day in Nebraska is May 10.
However, elections for townships, villages and public power districts under $40 million are handled differently. Incumbents in those offices have until July 15 to file, while non-incumbents have until Aug. 1. In addition, candidates who would like to file as a write-in candidate, are required to file an affidavit in order for the votes to be counted.
