Christmas Break Comes a Little Early For CPS
This week has seen Nebraska plunge into the deep freeze, prompting many area schools to start Christmas break a day or two earlier than originally planned. Students in Callaway are getting a head start to the break as well; however, Superintendent Bryon Hanson said that is not due to weather but actually to work being done on the roof.
Callaway Public School dismissed their students at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and the kiddos will return to class on Tuesday, Jan. 3. The break not only pertains to classes, but to activities as well. The Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) mandates a moratorium which states that “For five consecutive days in December, there shall be no practice and no interschool competition by individuals or teams in any athletic activity sponsored by the Nebraska School Activities Association. The specific dates for each five-day period will be set by the Board of Directors three years in advance.” This year those dates are Dec. 23 - 27.
The South Loup boys and girls basketball teams will be back in action the same evening classes resume, as both teams will travel to Hershey on Jan. 3. That same evening the Bobcat wrestling team will be on the road to Dunning for a triangular.
Callaway Public School believes in making the school experience not only an environment for learning, but for having fun while doing so. This week, they encouraged the students to dress in green on Monday for “Grinch Day” and to wear their comfy pajamas to school on Tuesday for “Polar Express Day”. Much to the delight of the students, even the staff gets in on the fun.
“We hope that you enjoy the time off with your children over the break. Hopefully you have a Merry Christmas and are looking forward to a great 2023!” - Principal Heath Birkel
