Board Sets New Policies For Option/Dual Enrollment
The Callaway Board of Education met on Monday, Nov. 14, with a fairly short agenda. Prior to diving into the business at hand, the board got a treat as members of the school’s 5th grade class presented their “Shark Tank” program.
The 5th grade students worked hard to come up with ideas for items they could create and sell, and the school board got the first peek at those ideas. The students had decided they really wanted to go to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha and spend the night in the aquarium, so they have decided to sell their “Shark Tank” items to help raise funds for the trip.
Following the presentation the board moved into business items, which included the approval of the non-resident option enrollment policy. The board had discussed the policy at the last meeting, and gave final approval at the November meeting.
“If you are an option student, a non-resident student, we have put into policy that we are not taking parttime option enrollment kids at any grade level,” Superintendent Bryon Hanson explained.
Another policy discussed at the October meeting and acted upon at the November meeting pertains to dual enrollment students. The new policy states that dual enrollment students will not be accepted into the school district in grades kindergarten through sixth. However, per NSAA guidelines, dual enrollment students must be allowed in grades 7-12.
“There are some restrictions and caps on classes, and things like that,” Hanson explained.
Dual enrollment includes any student who is already enrolled in another educational program, such as a private or parochial school, or homeschool. “It includes students in any other educational facility, whether it be accredited or non-accredited,” said Hanson. “As a member of the NSAA we would abide by their guidelines.” A number of policies relating to district operations were approved as presented, which is an annual approval.
The Board also reviewed the district audit, which Hanson said went extremely well and was approved as presented. “We have to go over the audit in open session, and it is an open record that people have access to,” Hanson said.
Hanson also gave a brief construction update to the board, and said they are waiting on a couple of small parts to finish up the installation of the new boiler system. The building is being heated, but not to the capacity it will be once the remaining parts come in. The new roof is nearly complete, and Hanson said he is hopeful the remainder of the new windows will be in soon.
The next meeting of the Callaway school board is set for Dec. 12 at 7 p.m.
