50 YEARS AGO:

Location and future plans for Callaway’s long-awaited street sign project will highlight the meeting of the Callaway Community Improvement Program. Members and interested persons are urged to attend the meeting at the Community Center to give their ideas concerning the street sign project.

Edward Binder, state director of the Selective Service, has announced that young men no longer have to register for the draft within 60 days of their 18th birthday. The rule ended April 1, 1975. From now on, youths will be required to register during a specific period once a year.

20 YEARS AGO:

The Callaway Village Board of Trustees heard a proposal during the July 5 meeting from Jenny Daup, a representative of a group of eight to 10 families in the village who are looking at the possibility of acquiring new playground equipment for Morgan Park. The board indicated its approval of the effort, and board member Jerry Meyer asked that the citizen committee determine what it wants and needs and then come back.

The board also formally accepted former police officer Ivan Phelps’ resignation.
